Syntyjä syviä ammentaa aiheensa eri kansojen luontomytologioista. Tuonpuoleisella on oma topografiansa, jumalat asuvat vuorilla, haltiat metsässä tai vesistöissä. Oikeastaan kaikki keskeiset myyttiset tapahtumat ja toimijat ovat paikallistuneet luontoon.
Näyttelyn kuvat on vedostettu 1860 ja —70-luvuilla laajasti käytössä olleella märkälevyferrotypiamenetelmällä. Ferrotyyppi on suorapositiivivalokuva, jossa mustattu metallilevy (näyttelyssä mustaksi elaksoitu alumiini) herkistetään juuri ennen kuvan valottamista ja kehitetään heti tämän jälkeen.
Songs of Wit and Wisdom draws its subject matter from the nature mythologies of different peoples. The underworld has its own topography, the gods live in the mountains, the elves in the forest or in the waters. In fact, all the major mythical events and actors are localized in nature.
The images in the exhibition have been made with the wet plate collodion tintype technique prevalent mainly in the 1860s’ and -70s. Tintype is a direct positive photographic method in which a blackened metal plate (in the exhibition black aluminium) is sensitised right before exposure and developed immediately thereafter.
